Morocco is world famous for its arts and crafts as a visit to any souk shows. At Discover we like to take people “behind the scene” and meet true professionals whose work is very desirable to collectors. We can arrange private visits to these artists to watch them at work. The subjects cover calligraphy, pottery, weaving, leather work, metal work and jewellery, to name but a few.
Cookery schools are becoming highly popular for those wanting to experience a hands on learning of traditional Moroccan cookery as well as the way herbs and spices are used. There are many such excellent “schools” in Marrakech as well as Essaouira and Fes. A day will incorporate going on a buying tour with the chefs so you experience an everyday Moroccan shopping experience. There is one “stand out” such school located about 45 minutes from Marrakech. Set in a private bio farm the renowned Moroccan chef Tarik conducts classes as well as showing clients the use of products from his farm. This is a unique experience.
In Marrakech there is a hot air balloon company who have been operating in Morocco for some 20 years now. The owner Maurice is one of the world’s top balloonists and his operation is highly professional. It is an early start as the best flying is at dawn. You are collected from your Riad/hotel and taken for 40 minutes outside Marrakech to the launch area. The balloon slowly drifts over local villages with the Atlas Mountains in the background. Normally the flight lasts for an hour and when you land Maurice’s follow cars are there to take you to the local village for tea and bread dipped in local honey. You experience this in a local’s home. Generally you get back to your accommodation by around 1100 hrs. A truly magical experience.
During the winter and spring months white water rafting is possible in Ourika valley about 1 hour from Marrakech. The team leaders are highly qualified & trained and have rafted all over the world. Helmets and wet suits are provided.
